Schaller, who has completed his recording of the complete Bruckner symphonies, begins a series of different editions in earnest. Gerd Schaller, who released Bruckner's Symphony No. 1 in Linz 1866 with the Philharmonie Festiva in 2012, now takes on the Vienna 1891 edition. Having completed his recording of Bruckner's complete symphonies, Schaller's next challenge is a different edition of each symphony. In the past, 18 different discs of the editions performed by Rozhestvensky were released, and Schaller intends to make this an even bigger project than that. He says the project is not just for Bruckner specialists and enthusiasts, but will also appeal to general music lovers, who will have the pleasure of choosing which edition is their favorite. Symphony No. 1 was composed in 1866, with details revised in 1977 and 1984, and a major revision in 1891, following the revision of Symphony No. 8. According to Schaller, the music itself is not much different, but the orchestration is thicker and more massive and acoustically effective, as in the later symphonies.To highlight the acoustic differences from the 1866 Linz disc, the concert was recorded live, this time at the Max Rittmann Saal, Regentenbau, Bad Kissingen, rather than at the Abbey Church of Ebraha. Schaller praises this hall as one of the best in the world for Romantic works, with a warm, silky sound that brings out the individual voices clearly, while at the same time being ideal for Romantic works.
