From Kubelík's "New World," "My Homeland," and "Slavonic Dances" to Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, here comes a top-notch box set from Profil, a series of box sets of mostly hard-to-find recordings, this time from the popular master Kubelík, mostly from EMI and Decca. Many Raphael Kubelík discs have been released, but those by the late great composers such as Dvořák and Smetana are unparalleled, definitive masterpieces. This box contains Dvořák's "New World" and "Slavonic Dances," Smetana's "My Homeland," and Janacek's "Sinfonietta," all of which are excellent recordings. The Dvořák piano concerto is performed by Firkushny, and the cello concerto by Fournier. Although both recordings are old, the young maestros' masterful fingerwork is fascinating. Although most of the recordings are old, you can enjoy the youthful Kubelík's passionate and powerful playing, which cannot be heard in later recordings. Even more delightful are the Russian works.Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" are also valuable, but the highlight is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, recorded on December 13, 1945, a mere 40 days after Mravinsky gave the world premiere in Leningrad, which is surprising. This performance was previously released on CD by Supraphon, but is hard to find today. This recording is a must have for anyone interested in Shostakovich. King International
