The Profile label is known for Günter Wandt's concertos, which he has performed with many of the world's greatest musicians, at a surprisingly low price! This 6-CD box set of concertos from the label's own recordings is a must-have for any music lover. The most impressive feature of this box set is the splendid lineup of soloists. The piano soloists are Magalov, Firkushny, Kassadosh, Girelis, and Bollet. All of them are superb, but the best performance is the Tchaikovsky by Bollet, who was at the peak of his maturity just before he developed acquired acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Vant was on fire, and it is rare to hear a more convincing Tchaikovsky concerto. The winds were led by Schellenberger on oboe and Baumann and Brain on horns. The Mozart with Dennis Brain is a 1951 broadcast session in mono with no audience noise or applause. The fast tempo and brisk sound delivery is that of Bant, but Blaine's playing is flawless and without a trace of danger. The violinist of note was the female Edith Pyneman in Prokofiev's Concerto No. 1.Despite the title of Concerto Edition, you can also enjoy purely orchestral numbers such as Haydn's Symphony No. 76, Vant's 18th Symphony, Brahms' Serenade No. 1, and Mozart's Overture Collection.
