Pry and Berger Dream AlbumsTwo rare recordings of Erna Berger (1900-1990) and Hermann Pry (1929-1998), two of the most important German vocalists of the 20th century, are now available on two discs. However, they do not perform together, but rather, you can fully enjoy the solo singing of each of them. The Electrola recording of Wolf's "Italian Lieder" features 24 of the 46 songs by Pry and 22 by Berger, and offers a supreme performance style. Although it is highly acclaimed as a masterpiece, this is the first time it has been released on CD, and is very welcome. What is delightful is that we can hear Berger's "Love of a Poet" and Mendelssohn's "On the Wings of Song". Also fresh are Schubert's "Serenade" and "Wild Roses," sung by Pry's youthful singing in his early 20s. The 28-year-old Pry's masterful rendering of "Four Solemn Songs," which depicts the deep world of Brahms in his final years, is also a treat to hear. King International
