Volume 12 features *Kreisleriana* and *Dances of the David League*. The “David’s Alliance Dance Suite” was dedicated to W. v. Goethe, Goethe’s grandson. “David’s Alliance” refers to a fictional alliance through which Schumann—who saw himself as a champion of Romanticism—expressed his opposition to the materialism of his time, drawing on the story of David’s battle against the Philistines. With a clear, well-defined touch, he brings Schumann’s delicate soundscape to life in a refreshing and subtle manner across this 18-piece collection. In his previous recording, Volume 11 (HC17037), Ulrich recorded the first draft of the Kreisleriana.
