The Profil label's 12th release in the Semperoper series features the complete "Carmen" by Böhm, which has been released on the Preiser label and other labels in the past. This is a broadcast recording made in Saxony in 1942 during World War II. The quality of the recording is astonishing, with the best of the German technology of the time. The all-star cast, sung in German as was the custom at the time, includes Elisabeth Hengen's Carmen, Torsten Ralph's Don Jose, Joseph Hermann's Escamillo, and Elfrede Weidrich's Michaela, and it is almost as if it were a Wagner opera. The power of the young Böhm is incredible, and his wonderful music-making, full of weight and smooth flow, keeps you glued to the stage until the very end. The music is full of weight and a smooth flow that keeps you on your toes until the very end. A bonus disc of secret Carmen recordings is a unique feature of this album. There is a full hour of recordings, from the old cylinder recordings by Ehrfahr von der Osten in 1905 and the trumpet recordings by Röttberg and Tauber to the postwar magnetic tape recordings of 1945.This is a must-have treasure for opera fans and specialists alike. In addition, one of the series' most appealing features is the lavishly illustrated commentary, which is also included.
