Strauss, Richard (1864-1949)
Description:
Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden celebrate the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss' birth! This year marked the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss' birth, and the Staatskapelle Dresden, which had close ties with him, gave several commemorative concerts under Thielemann's direction. The album features two works from Richard Strauss's early and late years: the Serenade, composed at the age of 17 and premiered by the Dresden Court Orchestra the following year, is a 13-wind work similar to Mozart's Grand Partita, while the Horn Concerto from the same period was performed by the Staatskapelle Dresden in 1969. The horn concerto from the same period was composed for his father, who was a virtuoso horn player. On this album, Robert Langbein, the orchestra's principal horn player since 2005, gives a superb solo performance. The Sonatina No. 1 for wind ensemble, composed in 1943 during World War II, is a beautiful piece of music that is clear and unforced, similar to Richard Strauss's works of the last years of his life, although he referred to himself as a "wounded soldier" in self-mockery during his evacuation. In "Metamorphosen," in addition to Thielemann's soulful conducting, the beauty of the Staatskapelle Dresden strings under Yuki Manuela Janke shines through. The 68-page color booklet with abundant photos is also invaluable. King International
