A Promising, Beautiful Pianist Takes on a Rarity by Rachmaninoff Ekaterina Litvintseva made her debut with a Mozart piano concerto. Born in 1986 in Magadan, a town on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, she moved to Moscow with her family at the age of 15 and studied under Irina Gabrilova, Alexander Mundyants, and Ekaterina Derzhavina. She also took lessons from Robert Kulek, Rudolf Kerer, and Andrzej Jasiński. Her second album is a collection of Rachmaninoff’s early works. Of particular note is the “Suite in D minor,” an orchestral piece composed by Rachmaninoff in 1891 while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory. Because it required a full orchestra, it could not be performed by the student orchestra, so Rachmaninoff created a piano version to play it himself. Both scores had been lost, but the piano score was discovered in 2000 at the Glinka Music Library in Moscow. Although the authenticity of the score remains unresolved due to the absence of Rachmaninoff’s signature, the appearance of this recording is most welcome. It is a work brimming with youthful energy and pianistic charm that Rachmaninoff fans are sure to love. Additionally, Litvintseva’s refreshing performance shines in the Prelude in F-sharp minor—affectionately known as “The Bells”—from the *Fantasy Pieces*, which he composed the following year and dedicated to his mentor, Arensky.
