Dalbert’s Amusing One-Act Opera “The Departure” A Recording Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of His Birth Is Revived A Rare Recording by the Tragically Short-Lived Character Tenor, Wolfwart Eugen Dalbert (1864–1932), known as a great pianist and the mentor of Backhaus, also achieved considerable success as a composer, writing as many as 20 operas. While his dramatic opera *The Lowlands* is particularly popular, *Departure* is a light, one-act comedy. It premiered in Frankfurt in 1898 and was a hit. Gilfen and Luise are a married couple in a rut. Although Gilfen is planning a long trip, he is unable to go through with it because he worries his wife might have an affair while he is away. Their friend Trot urges Gilfen to leave, and he finally sets off. Trot immediately begins to make advances toward Luise, but she rejects him. When Gilfen—whose departure was actually a ruse—returns home, it becomes clear that his wife has remained faithful, and the couple rekindles their love. This recording was produced by Bavarian Radio to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Darbel’s birth. It was previously released by CALIG. The conductor is Jan Kutzier, who served as assistant conductor to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra during the Jochum era. Lotte Schödel, who plays Luise, is a soprano born in Füssen in 1926. She specialized in roles as young women. Willi Ferrenz, who plays Gilfen, is a baritone born in Vienna in 1923. He is a skilled singer who excelled in distinctive roles. Erwin Wolfahrt, who played Trot, was a tenor who delivered a powerful and memorable performance as Mime in the “Ring” cycle conducted by Böhm at Bayreuth. He passed away prematurely in 1968 at the age of 36, just as his career was taking off, making this recording all the more precious. King International
