A world premiere recording certain to attract attention: the Ninth Symphony with completed finale, in William Carragan's 2010 revised edition Gerd Schaller conducts Bruckner symphonies live A notable release presenting the Ninth Symphony in the latest revised version of the finale, reconstructed in 2010 by William Carragan, the leading authority on Bruckner scholarship. - World premiere recording of the Ninth Symphony with the finale in Carragan's 2010 revised edition Bruckner completed the first three movements of the Ninth Symphony between 1887 and 1894, but the work was left unfinished at his death in 1896. Several different versions have attempted to complete the finale: - "Samale & Mazzuca 1984 reconstruction of the finale" - recorded by Inbal and Rozhdestvensky - "Samale, Phillips, Cohrs & Mazzuca 1992 reconstruction of the finale (2005 revision by Samale & Cohrs)" - recorded by Bosch The version by William Carragan, the authority who carried out his reconstruction work between 1981 and 1983, already exists on disc in its original form and in the 2003 and 2006 revisions; what appears here is the most recent revision, dating from 2010. At 22 minutes 12 seconds of playing time, it makes for substantial and rewarding listening. - Philharmonie Festiva An orchestra made up of members and principal players drawn from the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra. It grew out of the Munich Bach Orchestra, the internationally renowned ensemble founded by Karl Richter in 1953, and performs with flexible instrumental forces designed to encompass the great masterpieces of the Classical and Romantic eras. - Gerd Schaller Born in Bamberg in 1965, Schaller began his conducting career at the Hannover State Opera in 1993, moving to the Braunschweig State Theatre in 1998 and serving as General Music Director of the Theater Magdeburg from 2003 to 2006 - a maestro who came up through the opera house. He is particularly admired in the operas of Wagner, Strauss and Verdi, and his recording of Goldmark's Merlin for Profil also drew considerable attention. That Schaller, who has built his reputation largely in the theatre, should now turn to three Bruckner symphonies at once - and to the Ninth with a completed finale at that - is bound to be widely discussed.
