A Rare Live Collection by the Master Aronovich A Haunting and Powerful Depiction of Hell: Liszt’s “Dante Symphony” Fantasy and Sensual Beauty Explode: Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy” The fifth installment in Profil’s vigorous series of live recordings by the master Aaronovich (1932–2002) features a program centered on Liszt and Wagner, performed with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the hr Symphony Orchestra). Liszt’s “Dante Symphony,” composed while he was obsessed with Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” This is likely because the music depicts “Hell.” From the opening’s weighty trombone roar—which could easily be mistaken for the theme of a monster movie—there is a relentless sense of tension and intensity that leaves no room to breathe. In the middle section, the skillful woodwind solos are also truly impressive. Furthermore, in contrast, in the second movement, “Purgatory,” Aronovich demonstrates his steady mastery in crafting drama within music where mystery and melancholy intertwine. Here, Aronovich adopts the ending that Liszt later revised—one that concludes powerfully and majestically—followed by Wagner’s “Rienzi” Overture, with its brilliant and grand scale. When Liszt revealed his compositional plan for the “Dante Symphony” to Wagner, the latter strongly objected to the inclusion of “Paradise”; consequently, the final form adopted was to add the “Magnificat” after “Hell” and “Purgatory.” The second half of the album features Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy,” conducted by the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra. This masterpiece—a rich blend of mystery, fantasy, and sensuality—is right up the alley of the Leningrad-born Aronovich; it is only through a performance as unrestrained and bold as this that the piece’s charm truly comes to life.
