A recording from the world premiere of Symphony No. 2—considered the masterpiece of Boris Tchaikovsky (1925–1996), whose work has been undergoing a remarkable reappraisal in recent years—has surfaced. Composed in 1967 and dedicated to Kondrashin, this work already has a Melodia recording from 1969 featuring the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kondrashin—but who would have imagined that a live recording from the world premiere would still exist? The sound quality is surprisingly clear, and it conveys the tension and excitement of the premiere. Furthermore, the collection of piano miniatures performed by Boris Tchaikovsky himself is simply superb. Originally a student of Oborin, he possessed skills as a pianist that went far beyond a mere composer’s hobby.
