The latest instalment in Profil's Semperoper Edition: Kempe's Der Freischutz Transferred, as always, from the original master tapes The newest release in Profil's flagship Semperoper Edition is Weber's Der Freischutz. Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) was music director of the Dresden State Opera from 1949 to 1951, and during those years he made a series of outstanding complete opera recordings for broadcast. Tapes of several of them found their way to the United States soon afterwards and were issued on LP, spreading Kempe's name around the world. This Der Freischutz is one of them. Though repeatedly reissued during the LP era, it has appeared on CD only twice, in small quantities, and a new edition has long been awaited. For this release Profil has used the original tapes held in the archives of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), bringing a recording made more than sixty years ago back to life in strikingly vivid sound. Despite the Dresden State Opera's deep historical ties to Weber, no Dresden recording of Der Freischutz was made before 1960 apart from this Kempe set and a wartime broadcast conducted by Karl Elmendorff (issued by Profil as PH07060 and by Preiser as PRCD90386). For anyone who wants to hear Der Freischutz in the old-school sound of the Staatskapelle Dresden, this postwar Kempe recording is ideal. The recording had long been dated to 1949, but it has now been established that it was in fact made from 20 to 22 May 1951, to mark the 125th anniversary of Weber's death (Die Meistersinger had been recorded shortly before, from 2 to 7 May). The singers are the leading names of the Dresden company of the day. Bernd Aldenhoff as Max was one of the great Heldentenors of the 1950s, appearing two months after this recording at the first postwar Bayreuth Festival. Elfriede Trotschel, the Agathe, was active from a young age but died in 1958 at only 44, which makes her surviving recordings especially precious.
