Led by Enzo Favata, the “Atlantico Quintet” explores a musical realm where jazz, chamber music dynamics, and improvisation converge. While their performances are never predictable, they possess a solid sense of direction rooted in a broad musical background that includes the diverse traditional folk music styles found in southern Italy and the Mediterranean region.
Led by Sardinian saxophonist and clarinetist Enzo Favata, the group features longtime collaborators: guitarist Marcello Pegin, bandoneonist Daniel Di Bonaventura, double bassist Salvatore Martana, and drummer UT Gandhi—the same lineup that appeared on the 1999 album *Atlantico*.
Marking Favata’s first recording for ECM, the band creates a richly colorful acoustic soundscape shaped by travel, memory, and imagination. Drawing inspiration from the cultural exchange across the Atlantic and the literary visions of writers such as Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Luis Borges, the music of *Atlantico* unfolds in a dreamlike flow. Within a structure woven from Favata’s lyrical woodwinds, Pegin’s elegant guitar tones, Di Bonaventura’s emotive bandoneon, and the delicate interplay between bass and drums—within this interwoven structure, clear melodies emerge from nowhere and are transformed by this quintet, moving with a sense of natural dialogue and discovery.
