Her 2023 album *Omnicode Real Book*, which marked her Blue Note debut, received critical acclaim and won a Grammy Award; her February 2024 concerts in Japan were sold out and generated significant buzz; and she won another Grammy Award for her 2024 album *No More Water*. She is one of the greatest producers and bassist/singer-songwriter, Michelle Ndegeocello—who has received high praise and won a Grammy Award for her 2023 *Omnicode Real Book*, her debut on Blue Note, and whose February 2024 Japan tour was sold out and generated significant buzz—is back with her first major new album in two years. This duet album features an all-star lineup of guests, including Chaka Khan, Cynthia Erivo, Cat Power, and Brandi Carlile. The tracklist spans a wide range of genres—from 1960s folk, 1970s soul, country, and pop to 1980s R&B and electro-boogie, early 1990s alternative rock, and early 2000s hip-hop. With the album title “Synonym” conveying the message that “though we are all different, the essence of being human is the same,” this album is packed with tracks featuring guests from various genres and incorporating a wide range of sounds, fully expressing her philosophy of cherishing all kinds of music across genres. Speaking about the album, Ndegeocello said, “This work is a tribute to classic songs that have continued to be loved by many people. Each track has its own distinct tone, genre, and intended groove. But at the same time, this album is also a work about joy, self-expression, individuality, and experiences shared by all of humanity. I developed a sense of how to interpret other people’s songs during my time in Washington, D.C., when I was playing in a go-go band. That’s because we had to perform someone else’s songs with our own voice and character. Also, my father played in an Army big band, and we often talked about the definitive arrangements by Count Basie and Duke Ellington. A song is, after all, nothing more than a framework,” she said.
