Description:
Im Yun-chang, the jewel of the Korean piano world. His debut album, recorded by KBS in 2020! Im Yun-chang, the rising star of the piano world, made a name for himself worldwide in 2022 when, at the age of just 18, he became the youngest winner in the history of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, while also winning the Audience Award and the Best Performance of a New Work Award. In 2018, the year after he enrolled in the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in the Arts, he won second place and the Chopin Special Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition, as well as third place (as the youngest competitor) and the Audience Award at the Cooper International Competition. Furthermore, the following year, in 2019, at the age of 15, he became the youngest winner of first prize at the Isang Yun International Music Competition, the UNESCO Creative Cities of Music Special Prize (Audience Award), and the Park Seong-yong Gifted Artist Special Prize—three awards in total—demonstrating that his talent had been highly regarded even before his remarkable achievement at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. This album, recorded by KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) in 2020 and featuring Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and Liszt’s “Years of Pilgrimage, Year 2: ‘Italy’,” marks the debut album of Im Yun-chang, truly one of the shining heroes of the Korean classical music scene today. The boldness with which he selected two works—Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” a masterpiece among masterpieces, and Liszt’s “Years of Pilgrimage, Year 2: ‘Italy,’”—which includes the notoriously difficult “After Reading Dante”—for the program of his debut album is a clear indication that he was already a world-class artist.
