Martha Argerich at the Verbier Festival The Queen of the Keyboard Performs Beethoven & Shostakovich Concertos A music festival held every summer in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier. This release features live footage of Argerich’s concerts from 2009 and 2010. Argerich turned 70 on June 5, 2011, yet her technique shows no signs of waning, and she continues to perform with great vigor. First up is her 2009 performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2—a majestic rendition that she mastered completely. She delivers a thrilling and compelling performance that truly showcases her signature style. Next is her signature encore piece, D. Scarlatti’s Sonata K. 141. This is one of the most famous works among his 555 sonatas and is a notoriously difficult piece featuring intense repeated notes. Next, in 2010, comes Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Its official title is “Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra.” It is quintessentially Shostakovich—full of humor and irony—and the interplay with the trumpet is magnificent. Argerich’s crisp, lively touch remains as sharp as ever. The trumpet soloist is David Guillier, a highly talented musician who won the Maurice André International Trumpet Competition at age 14 and, at age 18, became the first person since Maurice André to take first prize at the Munich International Competition. He is a virtuoso who currently serves as principal horn of the Orchestre National de France. The program concludes with what is effectively Bizet’s only symphony, in C major.
