He performed at the 2009 Verbier Festival in Switzerland, delivering performances of two major sonatas by Beethoven and Chopin that clearly showcased Gernel’s unique interpretations. Beethoven’s Sonata No. 26, “The Farewell,” is a pivotal work marking a transition to his late style. Gernell’s expression of joy in the third movement, “Reunion,” is magnificent. Chopin’s Sonata No. 3 is a masterpiece of his mature period, featuring rigorous structural beauty, rich harmonies, and beautiful, romantic melodies.
