He sets this production of “Falstaff” in “La Casa di Riposo,” a retirement home for former singers that was one of Verdi’s late-life projects. Falstaff is an elderly former singer who once enjoyed great popularity in this role. The story begins with him dozing off on a sofa, and as past and present gradually intertwine, the narrative of “Falstaff” unfolds. Through this approach, Micchiaretto skillfully and vividly portrays the state of mind associated with old age, the nostalgia for the past, and the determination to forge a new path as a composer still active in his old age—all of which the elderly Verdi imbued in “Falstaff.” This innovative production of *Falstaff* was highly praised in newspaper reviews and became one of the highlights of the Verdi Year. The cast features the very best singers currently available for a production of *Falstaff*. Ambrogio Maestri in the title role and Massimo Cavalletti as Ford are the same two singers who performed in La Scala’s 2013 tour of Japan. It is no exaggeration to say that Maestri, in particular, is the greatest Falstaff of his generation. Alice is played by Fiorenza Cedrins, a prima donna who is also popular in Japan. Eleonora Bratt, who plays Nanetta, is a soprano of the new generation whose performance as Amelia in *Simon Boccanegra*, conducted by Riccardo Muti during the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s 2014 Japan tour, is still fresh in our memories. Javier Camarena, as Fenton, is a Mexican-born tenor. He is taking the opera world by storm as a new-generation Rossini tenor; in 2014, he received rapturous applause for his portrayal of Don Ramiro in *Cenerentola* at both the Metropolitan Opera and the Salzburg Festival. And to top it all off is the orchestra—true to the Salzburg Festival’s reputation, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta is a truly breathtaking, unparalleled ensemble.
