Great Leap Forward Dresden Philharmonic & Michael Sanderlinck Shostakovich Symphony No. 15 Live at the New Hall in Dresden February 2019 It will soon be 75 years since the bombing of Dresden (February 13, 1945), a major air raid carried out by the Allied Forces in the closing days of World War II The video was shot on the same day as the bombing. This video contains a performance that took place in Dresden on February 13, 2019, the same day as the bombing. The performance was given by the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and its chief conductor, Michael Sanderlinck, who are proud of their 150-year tradition of performing Shostakovich's last symphony, Symphony No. 15. The relationship between the two orchestras has taken a great leap forward since 2011, when Michael became Chief Conductor, and the long-established orchestra is now in a new era with Michael following Mazur, Janowski, de Burgos, and others. The recording projects of Beethoven and Shostakovich are also highly acclaimed, especially Shostakovich's father Kurt, who was a close friend of the composer himself. Kurt Sanderling's performance was said to be the twin of Mravinsky's, so it is highly anticipated to see how Michael plays it.The Palace of Culture (Kulturpalast), also known as the home of the Dresden Philharmonic, reopened in April 2017 and is playing in a new hall with improved acoustics in this video.
