Pressler’s 90th Birthday Concert in Paris Mozart Piano Concertos Performed by Pressler & Järvi Menachem Pressler, a master pianist born in 1923. He was a founding member of the Beaux-Arts Trio and remained active with the group for many years; since the trio’s dissolution in 2008, he has been performing energetically as a soloist in concert halls around the world. During his visit to Japan in 2014, his duo recital with Sayaka Shoji filled the hall with a quiet sense of emotion through his compassionate performance. This video features performances of Mozart’s piano concertos with the Orchestre de Paris, conducted by Paavo Järvi, held at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 2012 and 2014. Piano Concerto No. 27 was recorded in October 2012 at a Paris Orchestra subscription concert, shortly before Pressler turned 89. As Mozart’s final concerto, this work is beloved as a masterpiece of sublime beauty. Pressler’s gentle performance, completely free of any sense of artifice, offers a poetic and deeply evocative experience. Likewise, the encore—Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”—is a performance brimming with delicacy and lyricism that resonates deep within the listener’s heart. Then there is No. 23, performed at a commemorative concert celebrating his 90th birthday. The second movement of this piece is, without a doubt, the most beautiful. It begins with a dignified piano solo, followed by a melancholic melody taken up by the woodwind section. Pressler’s sublime music fully captures Mozart’s characteristic seamless beauty. I was also impressed by the gentle performance of Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris, who seemed to complement Pressler perfectly. This is a truly heartwarming collection of live recordings.
