The 2014 European Concert, in which Barenboim took the podium at the Berlin Philharmonie—the orchestra’s home venue, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary— featured a program of works related to Shakespeare, marking the 450th anniversary of his birth The Berlin Philharmonic was founded on May 1, 1882. The annual “Europe Concert,” held on May 1 to mark this anniversary, takes place at famous landmarks and historic sites across Europe, delighting audiences. In 2014, the concert took place at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Berlin Philharmonic’s home venue. Since 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the venue’s opening, the concert was held in Berlin. The program featured works commemorating the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Barenboim conducted. The concert begins with the overture to Otto Nicolai’s opera *The Merry Wives of Windsor*, based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name. This is followed by *Falstaff*, a symphonic study by Elgar, one of Britain’s leading composers. This piece portrays Falstaff, a character from Shakespeare’s play “Henry IV,” through orchestral music. It is a captivating work featuring orchestration reminiscent of Richard Strauss’s symphonic poems and the gentle melancholy of Elgar’s characteristic lyrical style. The Berlin Philharmonic’s masterful expressiveness and Barenboim’s precise interpretation make for a captivating performance. And finally, Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky, a composer who loved Shakespeare. Although this work has not been performed often by the Berlin Philharmonic in recent years, Barenboim recorded it with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1995 and with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 2004. This work is interwoven with expressions of human emotion; the tempo gradually accelerates toward the final movement, which reaches a climactic sonic peak.
