"POPPEA//POPPEA" is a production by Christian Spuck—who served as a choreographer for the Stuttgart Ballet and is currently the artistic director of the Zurich Ballet—and Gauthier Dance, a dance company led by Éric Gauthier. This program won the 2011 German Theater Award for “The Faust.” This footage is from a performance held in July 2013 at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, where the 650-strong audience reportedly rose to their feet in a standing ovation, with shouts of “Bravo!” and applause that wouldn’t stop. The program was inspired by Monteverdi’s masterpiece opera, *The Coronation of Poppea*. It is a drama of love and hatred centered on Emperor Nero and his mistress Poppea, telling a story where “love forgives and transcends all,” yet ultimately ends with the triumph of evil. The performance begins with a French introduction: “Good evening, everyone. It is a great honor for me to tell the story of Poppea and Nero.” Drawing on this powerful narrative, Spuck has created a stimulating production that incorporates experimental choreography, video projections, and narration. The music centers on Monteverdi—who can be considered the original source—and also features works by Robert Schumann, the Italian Baroque composer Geminiani, the German Baroque composer Westhoff, as well as songs by the Icelandic singer Emiliana Torini, the American singer Cat Power, and Martin Donner. Furthermore, the Blu-ray includes both 3D and 2D versions, with the dancers’ bodies emerging from the darkness to vividly portray a sense of sensuality. King International
