The Víctor Uliate Ballet has produced such notable dancers as Ángel Corella, who performed with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT); Lucía Raccara of the Munich Ballet; and Tamara Rojo, who danced with the Royal Ballet of England. It has a well-established reputation as a technically proficient ballet company with many dancers renowned for their flexibility and physical prowess. This video features the new production of “Coppélia,” premiered in 2006 and choreographed by Eduardo Rao, the artistic director of the Víctor Uliate Ballet Company. “Coppélia” is one of the masterpieces of ballet, composed by Delibes based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Sandman.” It tells the story of Coppelia, a mechanical doll created by Dr. Coppelius, an elderly dollmaker. Eduardo Rao, a prodigious talent from Andalusia, Spain, has masterfully reimagined this classic masterpiece, “Coppelia,” as a contemporary production interwoven with elements of neo-classical ballet. The story follows Dr. Coppelius, a researcher of artificial intelligence, as he works to create “Coppélia,” a female android capable of behaving like a human. Franz, a young man working in Dr. Coppelius’s laboratory, falls in love with this android. However, since Coppélia lacked human emotions, the goddess of holy spirits, known as the Spectral Diva, uses the “Mechanical God” to implant a human heart within her, causing her to desire a life with Franz. However, now that she possesses emotions, Coppelia’s heart is torn between Dr. Coppelius—who sees her as a source of financial gain—and Franz... ...The story unfolds in this way. While characters from the original, such as Swanilda, do not appear, the production incorporates modern, humorous elements—such as Coppelia being an android and the appearance of a DJ—along with near-future-style sets and costumes, and captivates the audience with vivid, skillful dancing that highlights the contrast between human and mechanical movement.
