It tells the familiar story of Romeo and Juliet, though because Bellini drew on the original Italian sources the plot unfolds rather differently from Shakespeare's play. The tragedy of two young lovers remains the same, however, and the opera's directness continues to win it a considerable following today. For this October 2012 staging at San Francisco Opera, the trouser role of Romeo is taken by Joyce DiDonato, the mezzo-soprano who has become one of the Metropolitan Opera's biggest stars. Her wide range, superb technique and keenly intelligent stage presence make for a compelling Romeo. Giulietta is sung by Nicole Cabell, an American soprano born in California in 1977, who won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2005 and joined the ranks of the star singers when DECCA released her aria recital in 2007; in January and February 2013 she sang Adina in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore at the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Romeo's rival Tebaldo is taken by Saimir Pirgu, the Albanian tenor active in Vienna and Zurich who is known above all as a Mozartian but is equally at home in lyric Italian roles. Giulietta's father Capellio is played by Eric Owens, whose Alberich in Wagner's Ring at the Met drew such acclaim, and he brings a powerful presence to the part. Riccardo Frizza conducts. He has led an important production at San Francisco Opera almost every season, and here too he shapes a taut and beautifully judged Bellini. The production marks the American debut of the French director Vincent Boussard, who moves the action to Bellini's own time (the early nineteenth century): Capellio and his circle appear in top hats while Giulietta and Romeo are dressed in contemporary style, sharpening the generational conflict.
