This performance at the San Francisco Opera is the long-awaited stage recording. The cast features a lineup of accomplished American singers. The best-known among them is likely Eric Owens as Porgy, who became a familiar face after his impressive performance as Alberich in Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung” at the Metropolitan Opera. His affable appearance—which one might not expect from a villain—is a perfect fit for the good-natured Porgy. Rakita Mitchell, who plays Bess, is a soprano currently attracting a great deal of attention; in 2012, she sang the role of Violetta in Verdi’s *La Traviata* at the New York City Opera. Her portrayal of Bess in this San Francisco production has been highly praised in newspaper reviews. Shonshi Packer, who plays Sportin’ Life, participated as Mingo in the Harlem Theater’s September 2004 tour of Japan; he has grown remarkably since then and is now a popular tenor at regional opera houses across the United States. Lester Lynch of Crown is a singer who has gained popularity in recent years for his baritone roles in Verdi and verismo operas. Conductor John Demain is a lesser-known figure who has served as music director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra in Wisconsin for over 20 years since 1993. The Madison Symphony Orchestra is the orchestra of Madison Opera, and Demain also serves as the artistic director of that opera house. Having cut his teeth at Houston Grand Opera, he has a perfect grasp of the theater environment. This is also a great opportunity to discover a talented conductor who is relatively unknown in Japan. The staging by Francesca Zambello—a director active throughout Europe and the United States—is realistic and perfectly captures the essence of *Porgy and Bess*.
