Description:
Berlin Philharmonic European Concert 2013 in Prague Rattle’s baton shines brilliantly alongside his finest partner, Kožená! Don’t miss the concert footage from the beautiful Spanish Hall The Berlin Philharmonic’s annual European Concert. It attracts attention each year for being held in historic venues, and in 2013, the magnificent Spanish Hall within Prague Castle was chosen. Prague Castle towers along the Vltava River, which flows through the capital city of Prague. There, you’ll find the famous Spanish Hall, built by Rudolf II to display his prized art collection. The first piece performed was Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.” Based on a melody from “Psalm Arrangement for Archbishop Parker” composed by the Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis, Vaughan Williams composed this work as a fantasia for three string ensembles. The three separate ensembles—the full string orchestra, a small string ensemble, and a string quartet—interwove exquisitely and responded to one another, creating a striking string sound; Rattle’s nuanced interpretation was truly masterful. Next is Dvořák’s “Songs from the Bible,” performed by the renowned Czech soprano Magdalena Kožená. This song cycle consists of 10 songs based on the Psalms from the Old Testament in Czech, which Dvořák composed during his time in New York. Dvořák arranged five of the songs in this collection for orchestral accompaniment, while the remaining five were arranged by Zemanek, who served as conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. It is a performance that overwhelms the listener with the eloquent orchestra, Kožená’s beautiful voice, and her masterful expressiveness. The main program, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, is brought to life through Rattle’s uniquely modern and sophisticated interpretation. Daishin Kashimoto serves as concertmaster. King International
