Berlin Philharmonic, Waldbühne 2011 Respighi, Lota, and Shostakovich Conducted by Chailly The Berlin Philharmonic’s annual Waldbühne concert, held outdoors at the end of each season. In 2011, when Riccardo Chailly made his debut, the program centered on Respighi and included works by Nino Rota—a composer from Milan, like Chailly himself—as well as Shostakovich’s “Jazz Suite”—which Shai had popularized through studio recordings during his tenure as chief conductor of the RCO—ensuring, as always, a program carefully crafted to delight the audience. The evening was titled “Fellini, Jazz & Co. (Fellini, Jazz & Co.),” but in the suite “La Strada,” performed in the wake of the opening “Jazz Suite,” one is bound to be once again amazed by the Berlin Philharmonic’s flexible expressiveness, which brings to life the comedic flair and poignant sentiment found in Fellini’s film itself. It is precisely through such outstanding performances that we can truly appreciate the true value of Lota, who publicly declared, “I am, after all, a classical composer.” Just when you think the audience has already been completely captivated, the following pieces—“The Fountains of Rome” and “The Pines of Rome”—are performed with such exceptional artistry that the excitement reaches a fever pitch. Amid the dazzling, opulent sound of this ensemble of super-virtuosos playing at the top of their game, —despite the concert having been originally scheduled for July and then becoming the first postponement in Waldbühne history due to severe weather—the excitement and enthusiasm of the more than 20,000 audience members who had eagerly awaited this day were truly extraordinary, and their expressions of deep satisfaction were clearly visible on screen.
