In 2009, when maestro Muti took the stage, the concert was held at the prestigious Teatro San Carlo, the opera house in his hometown of Naples. Muti, then at the peak of his powers, selected a program for this occasion consisting entirely of pieces he knew best. The concert opened with the overture to Verdi’s *La Forza del Destino*, the maestro’s home turf, which awakened his instincts as an opera conductor. After completely captivating the audience with this single piece, he shifted gears to perform “Song of Remembrance,” the signature work of Martucci, who passed away right here in Naples. Muti had previously recorded this work in 1995 with the La Scala Orchestra and Freni as soloist, but here, the world-renowned soprano Urmana—who had earned acclaim for roles such as Aida and Tosca—responded to Muti’s conducting with a performance of outstanding presence. The concert concluded with “The Great,” a symphony rich in song-like qualities by the lieder composer Schubert. Hailing from Italy, the land of song, and recognized as a maestro with a natural gift for bringing beautiful melodies to life, Muti has completed a complete recording of Schubert’s symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic; among these, he recorded “The Great” in February 1986. Expectations are high for this upcoming performance, which marks a meeting between the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic—widely regarded as one of the world’s finest orchestras, rivaling the Vienna Philharmonic in popularity.
