This performance is amazing! Repin’s Bruch is also a must-hear! Video footage from the Berlin Philharmonic’s 2008 European Concert. The Berlin Philharmonic’s European Concert series features annual performances held on May 1—the orchestra’s founding anniversary—at historic buildings and concert halls across Europe. To date, they have been held in cities such as Prague, Madrid, London, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, and Lisbon. The venue for the 2008 concert was Moscow. The first piece is Stravinsky’s “Symphony in Three Movements.” True to Stravinsky’s original vision, this is a work with a strong “Concerto for Orchestra” character, and Rattle’s brilliant conducting brings out the dynamic energy of the music. The second piece was Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring Lepin as soloist. This work captivates with its sweet and melancholic melodies. Since Lepin has not yet recorded this piece on CD, this video—which showcases a delicate yet brilliant performance—is a must-listen for fans. And for the main event, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Rattle and the BPO deliver the spectacular performance that audiences have long awaited.
