Description:
The 2017 European Concert, given at Paphos, birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty Mariss Jansons conducts, with Andreas Ottensamer as soloist The European Concert is given every year on 1 May, the anniversary of the founding of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Held in concert halls and historic buildings across Europe, it is an annual tradition with a more serious programme than the orchestra's Waldbühne concerts. The 2017 edition took place in the Republic of Cyprus, with Mariss Jansons conducting and the Berliner Philharmoniker's principal clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer as soloist. The open-air stage was built at Paphos Castle. Paphos, a World Heritage site whose ruins span the ancient Greek and Roman periods through to Byzantine times, is also known as the birthplace of Aphrodite, and was a European Capital of Culture in 2017. Cyprus has been divided between the Greek-Cypriot south and the Turkish-Cypriot north since the conflicts of the 1970s, and as a crossroads between Europe and the Middle East it is home to a mixture of cultures - a background reflected in the programming here. The concert opens with Weber's Oberon Overture. Weber's Clarinet Concerto, which follows with Ottensamer as soloist, was written for Heinrich Joseph Baermann, clarinettist of the Munich court orchestra; it is an appealing work full of wistful colouring and high spirits, and Ottensamer's finely detailed playing, superbly supported by the Berliner Philharmoniker, is essential listening. The encore is the "Hungarian Fantasy on Themes by Weber" by the orchestra's own cellist Stephan Koncz. The main work is Dvořák's Symphony No. 8, in which the wistful melodies, the sweetness of the individual instrumental colours and Jansons's expert direction combine, under the Mediterranean sun, in a performance of great concentration. The radiant trumpets in the finale and the wealth of colour that follows are especially striking. The Blu-ray offers high-resolution 96kHz/24bit sound. King International
