Following the live performance at the Alhambra on August 20, 2006 (20.55538)—where Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 was the main piece—this recording captures the concert held one week later in Berlin. Named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poetry collection *West-östlicher Divan* (The West-Eastern Divan), the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a youth orchestra composed of musicians from Middle Eastern countries (Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria). Founded in 1999 by Argentine-born Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim and the late Palestinian-American literary scholar and critic Edward Said, the orchestra aims to put into practice its core philosophy of “building bridges toward coexistence.” Following the “Leonore” Overture No. 3—which was also featured in “Alhambra Live”—the orchestra performed Beethoven’s supreme masterpiece, the Ninth Symphony. With its celebration of human brotherhood, the work is deeply moving in its own right, making it an ideal choice for this ensemble. There is something inherently moving about watching these young, talented musicians, led by their charismatic conductor Barenboim, cling to his baton and wrestle with the music with single-minded devotion.
