Kurt Masur Memorial DVD Set Masur’s Music and Message of Peace Kurt Masur (aged 88), one of Germany’s leading conductors. As a conductor in the former East Germany, Masur led prestigious German orchestras such as the Dresden Philharmonic (1967–1972) and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (1970–1996), among other prestigious German orchestras. His collaboration with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, in particular, produced numerous acclaimed recordings. He was also actively involved in social causes, working tirelessly toward a peaceful resolution during the reunification of East and West Germany, and his statements and actions drew significant attention. He served as music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1991, became chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000, and from 2002 to 2008, he served as Music Director of the Orchestre National de France. He maintained a busy schedule, including many guest conducting engagements, but in his later years, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease and passed away on December 19, 2015, at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut. This DVD set features performances primarily with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and includes a documentary tracing his peace activism.
