Since 1996 he has also been Artistic Director and President of the Mariinsky Theatre (ballet, opera and orchestra)! He has been the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre since 1996. Since 1996, he has served as Artistic Director and President of the Mariinsky Theatre (ballet, opera, and orchestra), and has nurtured many world-class singers and introduced them to the world of music. This DVD box contains three Russian operas performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1996 and 1998. The first is Prokofiev's "The Convent Betrothal. This opera was first performed at the Kirov Theater in 1946. Anna Netrebko, now considered one of the greatest divas of our time, appeared in this opera. At the time, Netrebko was almost unknown, but Gergiev discovered her talent, and she sang beautifully, foreshadowing her current success. Next is Borodin's opera "Prince Igor," which includes the famous "Dances of the Daggers. The colorful and exotic stage, the singers, chorus, orchestra, and ballet all come together to create a spectacular performance that is a comprehensive work of art.Lastly, Tchaikovsky's opera "Mazeppa," set in 17th century Ukraine, dramatically depicts the relationship between the powerful Mazeppa and Maria, who is as old as a father and son, against a backdrop of political chaos. Gergiev's "Mazeppa" was performed in Japan in 2019 (in concert form), and the quality of the singers is astonishing, including the roughness of Nikolai Petulin as Mazeppa and the dramatic singing of Roskutova as Maria.
