Description:

James Ehnes New Recording! The Myth of Szymanowski! World-renowned for his astonishing virtuosity and crystal-clear lyricism, he was awarded the 61st Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Music" in 2019 for his Violin Concerto by Aaron Jay Kernis (PONYX4189/ONYX4189), and in 2021 he was named the Gramophone Award's Canadian virtuoso violinist James Ehnes was named "Artist of the Year" in 2021. He has been nominated for the Gramophone Award in the UK and the Juno Award, the "Canadian Grammy", and has collaborated with his friend Andrew Armstrong on many albums, including Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. The program will be centered around Shimanowski's masterpiece "Mythology," composed in 1915 on the theme of Greek mythology; Handel's D major sonata, once a staple of the violin repertoire but now rarely performed; Tchaikovsky's "Mute," full of beautiful lyricism; Poncet's "Estrellita"; the brilliantly technical "Flight of the Bee"; and "Molly on the Shore," in which the violin dances lightly, as well as encore pieces. The program includes Tchaikovsky's "Etude" and Ponce's "Estrellita," "The Flight of the Bee" with its brilliant technique, and "Molly on the Shore" with its lighthearted violin dance, as well as other sparkling pieces and encore pieces. James Newton Howard, one of the leading Hollywood composers of our time, has composed a violin concerto for Ehnes (on the Grammy Award-winning disc [PONYX4189/ONYX4189]) and "they have just arrived at this new level" for the Seattle Chamber Music Society, of which Ehnes is artistic director. The "133...At Least" recorded here is a dazzling miniature piece composed for Hilary Hahn. Tokyo M-Plus
