Highly functional ensemble led by James Ehnes! The final Beethoven volume, remotely session-recorded together in the Corona Disaster! With overwhelming acclaim, including "one of the perfect violinists on the planet" (The Daily Telegraph), and a stunning "Best Instrumental Performance" at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019 for Aaron Jay Kernis' Violin Concerto (ONYX4189), as well as a 2021 Canadian virtuoso violinist James Ehnes, who was named "Artist of the Year" at the Gramophone Awards. In addition to Ehnes, the quartet will also be joined in 2020 by Richard (Yonge) O'Neill, a renowned viola player who is also a new member of the prestigious Takács String Quartet, and Amy Schwartz Moretti, who played a superb duo with Ehnes in Bartók's duet collection (CHAN 10820). The Enes Quartet is a string quartet that has been described as a "dream team" (Strings magazine).The recording project planned for the Beethoven Year 2020 was forced to make major changes due to COVID-19, and the recording in the UK was abandoned. Instead, the recording was done in the U.S., and the sessions were monitored in real time from London by renowned British recording producer Simon Kiln (who has been involved in over 400 recordings for many labels, including major Aeneas albums), making use of modern technology. The project has been the focus of much attention for the overwhelming quality of the recordings, with all of Beethoven's string quartets from Op.74 onward recorded in two weeks, and the three previous volumes of Beethoven's late string quartets on par with many of the great recordings of the period. The fourth and final volume of this project features Beethoven's No. 15, composed in 1825 at the same time as Nos. 12 and 13 after overcoming illness, and No. 16, Beethoven's last masterpiece, completed a few months before his death.
