Vasily Petrenko is forging ahead on his path as a maestro of the new era, as it has been announced that he will take over from Vladimir Jurowski as Artistic Director of the Svetlanov Memorial Russian State Symphony Orchestra in January 2021. Petrenko has been the Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Orchestra since 2006 and Chief Conductor since 2009, and will continue his relationship with the orchestra as Conductor Laureate after September 2021. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) is one of the most prestigious orchestras in the United Kingdom. Following acclaimed albums of Stravinsky, Elgar, and Tchaikovsky, Petrenko & the RLPO turned their attention to the dramatic orchestral works of Zemlinsky and Schreker, written on the theme of fairy tales and fairytales.Zemlinsky's masterpiece "The Little Mermaid," based on Andersen's fairy tale and premiered at the same concert (1905) as his brother-in-law Schoenberg's "Pelleas et Melisande," is performed with the original version of the score, including restored parts that were cut due to critical criticism at the premiere. Franz Schreker's "The Princess's Birthday" by Franz Schreker, one of the most progressive Viennese composers of the time but ostracized by the Nazis, was premiered in 1908 as music for pantomime based on Oscar Wilde's story, and was Schreker's first successful work.
