Christine Schäfer – Winterreise Onyx, the label that has brought us recordings by world-class artists such as Viktoria Mullova, Pascal Rogé, Barbara Bonney and Yuri Bashmet, presents Christine Schäfer as its tenth release. One of Germany's most remarkable lyric sopranos, Schäfer here gives us her first solo album in some five years – and the work is Winterreise. Winterreise has of course been recorded by women before: by the sopranos Julianne Baird, Lotte Lehmann and Margaret Price; by the mezzo-sopranos Miriam Abramowitsch, Brigitte Fassbaender, Rosemarie Lang, Christa Ludwig, Lois Marshall and Mitsuko Shirai; and by the contralto Nathalie Stutzmann. This new account is bound to attract particular attention, coming as it does from a singer whose intelligent, finely judged style has served her superbly in repertoire ranging from early music to the twentieth century. Schäfer's concert diary is exceptionally full: during 2006 she is scheduled to appear with Harnoncourt, Haitink and Thielemann in Germany, Vienna and the Netherlands. The disc is presented to a high standard, in a beautifully embossed digipack evoking winter, with a 32-page booklet containing the sung texts in the original German.
