Description:

The Concluding Volume of Shafran’s Second Havana Series, Originally Released in Stereo During the “Cuban Missile Crisis”! This completes the set of Bach’s Unaccompanied Suites. On the eve of the “Cuban Missile Crisis”—a time said to be on the brink of nuclear war— Shafran was in Havana, the capital of Cuba! A life-or-death performance of Bach’s complete Unaccompanied Suites in Havana! Recorded in stereo on September 16, 1962. Following the sensational release of Shafran’s first Havana Unaccompanied Recital (Nos. 3, 5, & 6 / CDSMAC-056) from Spectrum Sound—the guardian label of Historical Records that continues to deliver historic recordings—here is the long-awaited conclusion to the complete series. Given the current situation—with cries that an American attack on Havana is imminent, following incidents in Venezuela and Iran—it is truly astonishing that Shafran, a former Soviet heavyweight and a giant of the cello world, was performing a concert in Havana, the capital of Castro’s Cuba, on September 16, just before the “Cuban Missile Crisis” (October 1962), when it was feared a U.S.-Soviet war might break out. With the Bay of Pigs incident having already occurred in Cuba the previous year, Shafran’s entry into Cuba amid such tense circumstances undoubtedly went beyond a mere political mission for the Soviet Union; it was, without a doubt, a life-risking venture. What could have driven Shafran to Cuba to such an extent? His performance can truly be described as an unaccompanied prayer that transcends mere emotion. And yet, it is remarkable that it was preserved—and in stereo, no less. It can truly be called one of the rarest treasures of humanity’s great historical musical heritage. SPECTRUMSOUND
