Shafran was in Havana, the capital of Cuba, on the eve of the "Cuban Crisis" that almost led to nuclear war! Shafran risked his life to play unaccompanied Bach at prayer in Havana! A bombastic new release from Spectrum Sound, the patron label of historicals that continues to offer the most talked-about historical recordings. It is a surprise that Shafran, a Soviet master of the cello world, gave a concert in Havana, the capital of Castro's Cuba, on September 16, 1962, just before the "Cuban Crisis" (October 1962), which was said to be the beginning of the Kennedy/Khrushchev war between the U.S. and Soviet Union. The Bay of Pigs incident had already occurred in Cuba the previous year, and Shafran's arrival in Cuba amidst such a tense situation was no doubt a risk of his life, exceeding the political order or mission of the Soviet Union.
