Centered around MICHAEL STIPE, along with PETER BUCK, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry—R.E.M. was formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia, and revitalized U.S. rock in the ’80s and ’90s by serving as a bridge between college rock and alternative rock. They became icons of the indie scene with 1983’s *Murmur* and 1984’s *Reckoning*, and went on to achieve mainstream success with 1987’s *Document* and 1988’s *Green* and beyond. This double-disc live album compiles recordings from their 1989 concert in Orlando, Florida, and their 1984 concert in New Jersey. It allows listeners to experience both the *GREEN*-era tour and the *RECKONING*-era performances—when the band was still leaning toward the indie scene—all at once, vividly capturing their transition from cult status to the mainstream. Based on radio broadcast recordings, the mix highlights the tight ensemble and Stipe’s melancholic vocals. Featuring “POPSONG89,” “ORANGECRUSH,” “FEELINGGRAVITYSPULL,” “BEGINTHEBEGIN,” “DRIVER8,” and their 1981 debut single “RADIOFREEEUROPE,” —this two-disc set concisely captures the trajectory of R.E.M. in the 1980s.
