Quatuor Diotima

Description:

The Diotima String Quartet, known for performing Beethoven’s late string quartets—the pinnacle of chamber music— through the lens of contemporary music, plays with extraordinary passion and total immersion. From the incredibly immersive “Great Fugue” to every other piece, this is a truly spectacular performance! The Diotima String Quartet, known for making a career out of performing and releasing contemporary works by composers like Lachenmann and Boulez, has surprisingly recorded Beethoven! It’s surprising that they’ve launched with a 3-CD set focused entirely on his late works, but considering that these pieces—infused with every human emotion and solemn dignity, and making full use of various forms, harmonies, counterpoint, fugues, and variations to thoroughly explore the possibilities of the string quartet—are the ultimate experimental works that revolutionized music history, this release makes perfect sense. And above all, not only do they demonstrate razor-sharp musical interpretation and exquisitely precise ensemble playing, but their performance is delightfully passionate! They play with such fervor, as if utterly captivated by the sheer fascination of Beethoven’s written notes, and their intense dynamic shifts stir the soul, drawing the listener deep into the music. For Symphony No. 13, the final movement is recorded first as the “Great Fugue,” just as it was at the premiere, with the replaced rondo finale included as a bonus track. This “Great Fugue” is a truly magnificent performance, but the other movements are also wonderfully rich, making the significance of listening to the entire work in one sitting abundantly clear. Every single piece is filled with fresh surprises and emotion, and I was amazed by the unexpected profundity of No. 16, which I had previously thought of as a minor work. This is a serious Beethoven performance made possible precisely because the Diotima String Quartet has continued to perform 20th-century works. Please be sure to listen with an open heart. PENTATONE
