The long-awaited world premiere recording of this moving masterpiece!! By the great American composer Douglas Moore, the 1951 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Giants in the Earth Douglas Moore’s opera Giants in the Earth has been recorded for the first time ever by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Delta David Gear. Set against the desolate, uninhabited landscape of the Dakotas, the opera depicts how the deep love between Berrett and Pär Hansa is tested by loneliness and the harsh realities of pioneer life. Moore’s text-oriented vocal writing flows with natural expression, weaving in short, expressive ariosos to form an unbroken melodic tapestry. At the heart of the story is Berrett’s ornate Norwegian chest, which serves as an altar, a place of solace, and a symbol of “home,” emphasizing the themes of memory, tradition, and human nostalgia. Moore’s tonal music portrays both strength and fragility through contrasts in vocal range, building tension toward the decisive choice Berrett faces amid a raging blizzard and a sense of loss. Every nuance is vividly rendered, from the intimate, lyrical scenes to the work’s devastating climax. This monumental recording, which illuminates the emotional intensity, psychological depth, and lyrical beauty of this work—long awaited for a complete performance—is a must-have for American opera enthusiasts. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra unearthed and edited this work, reviving it in Sioux Falls on April 26, 2025. PENTATONE
