Also includes Preludes and Fugues in C-sharp minor complemented by Meyer Julianna Avdeyeva recorded the complete 24 Preludes and Fugues in 2025, the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death. Reminiscent of Bach's Mean Clavier, this collection is one of the most difficult works written for the piano, not only in terms of technical difficulty, but also in terms of artistic depth. Avdeeva's overwhelming technique and profound interpretation make this a new masterpiece recording of this collection of works. Avdeeva's 24 Preludes and Fugues are coupled with the Prelude and Fugue in C-sharp minor, a work complemented by Krzysztof Meyer. A native of Poland, Mayer is a musicologist who studied with Lutoslawski and Penderecki and is highly regarded as a musicologist for his Shostakovich treatises. Shostakovich wrote a sketch of the Prelude in C-sharp minor in 1950, but did not publish it as a work at that time.He then decided to compose a new prelude and fugue in this key and eventually composed a work in C-sharp minor as one of his 24 preludes and fugues (No. 10). The original prelude sketches were discovered in the Shostakovich archives in Moscow in 2005 by Olga Digonskaya, a musicologist known for her Shostakovich research. Mayer used the sketches as the basis for the Prelude and Fugue in C-sharp minor, which he complemented in 2019 with his own fugue in a "Shostakovich style." Avdeeva will premiere the piece at the 2020 festival in Gorlish, Germany. Avdayeva will perform the piece around the world, beginning with the Shostakovich Festival in Leipzig on the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death.
