The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra led by Marek Janowski, born in 1939, recorded Dvořák's Stabat Mater with the MDR Leipzig Radio Chorus (chorus conductor: Philippe Arman) and the best solo singers of our time, Müller, Constantinescu, Elsner and Nazmi. Stabat Mater. The concert was recorded live on the day of the Dresden bombing (the indiscriminate bombing of Dresden by the Allied forces on February 13-15, 1945). Dvořák's "Stabat Mater" is one of the most popular and most frequently performed religious works of the late Romantic period, and the largest work of the same name in terms of both composition and playing time. The work was written in November 1877, shortly after Dvořák suffered the tragic death of all three of his children within just two years, and was premiered in Prague in 1880.The work is heartbreaking, yet shows a path from darkness to light, from despair to peace and hope, with subtle yet sometimes dramatic moments. Master musician Janowski avoids excessive sentimentality to create a more moving performance. PENTATONE
