Description:
French Songs Filled with Joy Master singer Kojenner recorded Debussy and Messiaen with Mitsuko Uchida! Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozenaer has been releasing many ambitious albums on the PENTATONE label. Her seventh album on the label, "L'extase", was recorded with Mitsuko Uchida! It is a collection of Debussy and Messiaen songs. Debussy's "Three Songs of Bilitis" is a unique song in declamation style. Bilitis is a fictional ancient Greek female poet who appears in a prose poem by the Belgian-born French poet Pierre Louis (1870-1925). The "Five Verses of Baudelaire" are Debussy's adaptation of poems from Charles Baudelaire's (1821-1867) "The Devil's Flower," a collection of rhymed poems expressing the pleasures and sorrows of love. And "Forgotten Arietta" was originally published as "Arietta (ditty), Belgian Landscapes and Watercolors, Six Landscapes," which was retitled in 1903. The poem is by Paul Verlaine (1844-1896). Kozenner has previously recorded the work in an orchestral version, and now it has been re-recorded with Mitsuko Uchida's wonderful piano performance. For Messiaen, Debussy was a lifelong admirer, and his acquaintance with Debussy's work was what made him decide to become a composer. Poems for Mi" is a series of songs for solo voice and piano or orchestra, written and composed by Messiaen. The first volume consists of four songs and the second volume consists of five songs, for a total of nine songs, of which this recording contains the second volume. The title "Mi" is a symbolic word for woman, a nickname Messiaen gave to his first wife, Claire Delbos. Volume 2 is a representative of Messiaen's songs that are rooted in his Catholic faith, including "Wife," which sings about the sacrament of marriage and compares the relationship between husband and wife to that of Christ and the Church, and "Your Voice," which compares the wife's voice to a spring bird and the angel's singing in praise of the Holy Trinity. The music is colorful, sensual, and sometimes exotic, characteristic of Debussy and Messiaen. Kozenner and Mitsuko Uchida, two of the finest performers of our time, have completed a substantial album that demonstrates their deep affinity for French music. PENTATONE
