The overwhelming energy of the voices approaches like a full orchestra! The New York-based Clarion Chorus presents this new recording on the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's birth in 2023. The Clarion Chorus, which has an established reputation for its Russian repertoire, has a special attachment to Rachmaninoff because he was born in Russia but spent the latter half of his life in the United States. Rachmaninoff's "Evening Prayer" is an all-night hymn to the dawn symbolizing the resurrection of Christ. Leader Steven Fox likens the song and Rachmaninoff's experience of being away from home during the revolution to the current conflict and suffering of the people in Ukraine. In addition to the 15 Rachmaninoff-created parts, it is also noteworthy that the songs 4, 5, 8, 12, and 14 are preceded by the original Kiev and Znameny chants on which Rachmaninoff was based. The Clarion Choir, which has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, proves that Rachmaninoff's "Evening Prayer," created as practical church music, is also an attractive concert work.
