German death metal band IMMORTALIS’s sole full-length album, originally released in 1991, has been reissued by HAMMERHEART. Rooted in old-school death metal, this unique masterpiece eschews mere violence and speed in favor of a relentless exploration of evil and fluid darkness. The guitar riffs evoke the sharpness and heaviness of Florida death metal, yet carry a distinct, unsettling distortion that creates a soundscape brimming with tension. The vocals stir a sense of psychological terror with their fierce growls, while the low-end surges generated by the drums and bass conjure up an evil lurking deep underground. The song structure is far from monotonous; it skillfully employs variations in the pace and repetition of riffs and rhythms to create a "ritualistic" and occult atmosphere. The production retains a raw edge while remaining clear, evoking the influence of early DANSWANO and HOLYMOSES. Circular riffs reminiscent of POSSESSED’s madness intertwine with the wicked sharpness of SLAYER, constantly keeping the listener on edge. Through the fusion of dark fluidity and heavy rhythms, this album constructs a unique sonic world that transcends mere old-school death metal. The CD includes a bonus disc featuring demo recordings from 1993.
