Julius Lenthen [1855–1932] was the most accomplished member of the “Lenthen family,” a musical dynasty that flourished in the Netherlands from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. Lenthen cultivated close friendships with Brahms and Grieg and studied composition under Reinecke and Liszt. As a late Romantic composer and director of the Amsterdam Conservatory, he composed numerous works and nurtured a new generation of musicians. Marking the 150th anniversary of his birth in 2005, there has been a rapid reevaluation of his work, and attention is now focused on his compositions, which are brimming with Romanticism. Soloist Arturo Murzabar is a renowned Spanish virtuoso who currently serves as principal cellist of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. Backed by the orchestra, Murzabar’s commanding performance fully conveys the charm of Lenthen’s cello concertos.
