The Faithful Shepherd" sonatas, a collection of sonatas that was highly controversial in the late 20th century as to whether or not it is an authentic work by Vivaldi, were first discovered in a musette version that was said to be by Vivaldi! For commercial reasons, Vivaldi sometimes indicated at the time of publication that the sonatas could be played on a number of instruments, and even before the authenticity of the sonatas was confirmed, they had been played on a variety of instruments, including flute, oboe, and violin. The recording was made using the bagpipes, which were probably intended when the piece was first composed. As for the authenticity of the results, they are based on or modeled after parts of Vivaldi's works, and were in fact largely composed by Nicolas Chedeville (1705-1782), an 18th century composer, oboe & musette (bagpipe) player, and musette maker at the court of Versailles, who also made a significant contribution as a musette maker.
